High Cholesterol
Includes
Hypercholesterolemia.
Description
The term hypercholesterolemia (literally "high cholesterolemia") means a high level of cholesterol in the blood as compared to a healthy level. It isn't a disease in itself, but rather a metabolic problem, i.e. a deviation from the norm.
High cholesterol can be caused by several factors, such as:
- A diet that is too high in cholesterol.
- Difficulty eliminating cholesterol.
- An overproduction of cholesterol by the liver (hepatic synthesis).
The last two factors are often influenced by nutrition.
From a naturopathic perspective, high cholesterol should be treated by eliminating its causes, rather than prescribing medication to merely mitigate its effects.
Dietary Considerations
Avoid saturated fats, fried foods and simple sugars. Be sure to eat enough protein at every meal. Also be sure to consume enough vegetable fibre (e.g. whole grains and vegetables).
